It's some kind of weird perspective illusion. I'm not sure what it is about the game that makes your hands feel huge but I was suprised how close the sizes were when I actually tried that. What I noticed was that the hand size and tracking actually matched very well with my real hand. Your eye will be kinda focused on the border between your room and the game so that you can see both.

Now move your hand up and down so that it crosses the "border" between real world and virtual representation of a hand.

Try to hold your hand the same way your character is shown in the game. Peak under the nose gap of your Rift and watch your real hand holding the touch controller. You know it's weird, I felt the hand size was huge as well, until I tried something.
